Madam,

The recent Brexit vote in Parliament was more than a vote on whether we should leave the European Union or not but about democracy itself.

The 89 MPs who voted against Brexit clearly do not accept this will of the majority. It is immaterial whether leave or remain was the outcome of the referendum, the people of the UK made their choice - end of story. Most of the MPs respected the decision of the people in that vote, even those who were fiercely pro-EU.

Sadly, and rather disappointingly, Ceredigion’s Member of Parliament, Mark Williams, decide to vote against Brexit and thereby against democracy.

It is well known that the Liberals (they no longer have a right to use the word Democrat in their title), and certainly their leader Tim Farron and ex-leader Nick Clegg, want the UK shackled to the EU.

Five out of the nine Liberal MPs voted against Brexit, therefore four supported the will of the electorate. Not all Liberals in Ceredigion voted to remain in the EU as the result in the county proved. There were also supporters of Plaid Cymru who voted to leave, yet all their MPs voted against democracy, meaning that Jonathan Edwards, Carmarthenshire’s MP, voted against the will of his constituents.

Yours etc,

Chris Samuel, William Street, Aberystwyth.
