Football shirts donated by Aberystwyth Football Club are to be given to a football team in Kenya.

Robert Sayles, alongside Aberystwyth Football Club, has provided Kenyan football team the Mombasa Eagles with 11 Aber FC football kits.

Robert has a house in Ystrad Meurig however, he spends most of his time living in Kenya with his wife.

“I currently live in Mombasa as I am married to a Kenyan lady and we have a house there.

“We also have a house in Ystrad Meurig, although my wife and I currently spend the majority of our time in Kenya,” he told the Cambrian News.

When he’s in Kenya, the local football team are the Mombasa Eagles, a club Robert likes to watch while he’s there. The team was founded in 2018, a spokesperson for the club said.

“Back then the team was made up of friends who just wanted to play football.”

Since then the club has grown to provide help to those within the community.

“Mombasa Eagles Football Club was born out of a need to give a platform to budding and exceptional football talents. These talents had nothing much but their football skills,” the club said.

“In addition to providing this platform, the club was set up to offer meaningful engagement to the youth who would otherwise be lost to social evils like drugs, getting into gangs and so on.

“The club was set up to be community oriented where it aims to be a vehicle of bettering the community through social and environmental projects.

“By its nature, the club aims to be a positive addition to the area. Through our community outreach, we see the limitless potential of our young citizens.

“We seek to bring change to the community with focus on environment and sustainability, health, gender equality, water sanitization and hygiene and economic empowerment.”

Aware of the club’s good nature, when Aberystwyth FC got in touch with Robert in the hope of donating some kits to a worthy cause, he knew where they should go.

Robert said: “Aberystwyth Football Club got in touch recently, asking if I knew any worthy recipients of football kits that they wished to donate.

“I got in touch with the Eagles in Kenya and they said they would be delighted to receive the kit.”

David Evans, is vice chairman of Aberystwyth FC.

He said: “The kits we’re donating are old academy kits which are no longer used, we keep all our kits with the hope that they might come to good use.

“We used to have someone who would help us send some kits over to teams in Africa however, in recent years, that hasn’t been possible.

“So when we heard about Robert going out to Kenya, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to provide kits for a team who might not otherwise have them,” he said.

Robert will soon return to Kenya and he hopes to donate the kit to the team while he is there.
