Traffic lights on the major road north of Aberystwyth are set to remain place for at least another year.

The lights have been on the A487, a trunk road meaning it’s one of Wales’ major highways, between Tre’r Ddol and Eglwysfach since 2023 following a serious road collision caused a one-lane closure.

The three-way traffic light system has been in place so long that it features on Google Maps and Wales has had four First Ministers since they were first set up.

When asked for an update on when work is set to begin on repairing the road, a spokesperson for the Welsh Government said: “Progress has been made on developing a repair solution.

“Investigations have been completed and a preferred option has been agreed.

“The scheme is now moving into detailed design, with work expected to be tendered this financial year and construction planned for next financial year. “

The Welsh Government added that the project has taken longer than originally expected due to ‘environmental requirements’ and additional ecological surveys, which ensure the work is done safely and complies with all regulations.

The road needs to be repaired as the collision in 2023 caused damage to the safety barrier and retaining wall supporting the carriageway.

The closed lane has since gathered debris and vegetation, with multiple drivers reporting issues and accidents due to the lights.

A third set of lights manages traffic from a private residence that sits directly in the middle of the coned section of road.

Speaking to the Cambrian News last year, one resident said: “If these lights were in Cardiff, the issue would have been sorted out in the first week.”

Speaking last year, Llangynfelyn Community Council said: “Our community council, alongside many others, including Cyngor Sir Ceredigion, look forward to NMWTRA completing these essential works.”
