I read the article about Cllr Endaf Edwards’ concerns about groups of students gathering around fires on Aberystwyth beaches and I fully agree with these.

These fires highlight a further concern of mine. The open fires on the South Beach are lit above the high-tide mark and involve building a circle of larger stones, which on heating become discoloured and often shatter, leaving sharp edges.

Although the ashes eventually get washed away, these fire circles remain visible for a very long time afterwards and are possibly a safety hazard.

I feel that they are an unsightly feature of the storm beach and seem to be increasing in popularity.

Other areas of the UK have by-laws to prevent this. I have a vague memory that this issue has been discussed in the distant past, but maybe it is time for consideration by local government before the new season (or even before 5 November).
