The Black Lion in Aberaeron will face a council licensing hearing later this month following an application by Dyfed-Powys Police to review the pub’s premises licence.

Ceredigion County Council has confirmed that its Licensing Sub-Committee will consider the review on 27 October.

The application was submitted by police and received by the council on 2 September.

Police have sought the review in relation to all four licensing objectives, which cover the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance and the protection of children from harm.

The council has confirmed that no interim measures have been requested or imposed while the review process is ongoing.

This means the Black Lion, on Alban Square, is currently permitted to continue operating in accordance with the terms of its existing premises licence ahead of the hearing.

When councillors consider the application later this month, the Licensing Sub-Committee will have a number of options available.

These include modifying conditions attached to the premises licence, removing the Designated Premises Supervisor, suspending the licence for a period or revoking it altogether.

The council said the list was not exhaustive and that the decision would be made following consideration of the evidence before the committee.

Ceredigion County Council has declined to disclose at this stage whether any representations were received during the consultation period.

A redacted copy of the police application is available on request through the council’s customer contact service, but the detailed grounds underpinning the police review have not yet been made public by the council.

The licensing proceedings come as the Black Lion is also currently being marketed for sale.

The Grade II listed Alban Square premises has been advertised with an asking price of £550,000, with details showing the building was “fully refurbished in 2025 to provide high quality public bar and seating area and also fully refurbished restaurant space on the first floor.”

There is currently no evidence to suggest that the sale of the freehold property is connected to the police licensing review.

The Licensing Sub-Committee hearing is scheduled for 27 October.
