CONCERNS have been raised that some businesses in Pwllheli may be flouting the rules when it comes to placing their goods outside their premises.
Cllr Elfed Gruffydd says he is concerned that pedestrians may be obstructed.
He told his fellow Pwllheli Town Council members: “I know a lot of shops in the town are putting their goods against the wall so there is enough room on the pavements for people.
“However, as a lot of businesses are now placing their goods outside, during the summer I became worried that it was becoming a problem for people who are walking on the pavements.
“There does need to be some order with this and shops need to make sure they keep the pavements clear.”
Robin Hughes, Pwllheli Town Council clerk, said he had already spoken with an officer from Gwynedd Council to voice concerns over the matter, but he was told that they believed there was enough room for pedestrians on the pavements and that everyone was sticking to the rules.
Cllr Alan Williams asked whether there was a need for a licence to place goods on the side of the street which would be similar to a licence for placing tables outside of a café.
He also questioned whether businesses pay anything extra to Gwynedd Council to place goods outside.
The council also want Gwynedd Council to confirm whether the businesses’ insurance covers their goods on the pavement.
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “We have received concerns from Pwllheli Town Council regarding some shops displaying goods outside their properties in the town.
“Officers from the council’s Transportation and Street Care Service have visited the area and on these occasions did not feel that the practice would impede pedestrians using the pavement in these areas.
"However, we will continue to monitor the situation and take action if necessary.”
