A ROW has erupted over a lack of stalls selling local produce at the Sunday market in Pwllheli.

The town council supported a proposal in 2007 to establish the local produce market on the Maes during the tourist season.

One of the conditions when it backed the application from Gwynedd and Meirionnydd branch of the National Market Traders Federation, was that it gave a platform for local craftworkers, artists and producers.

However, at a Pwllheli Town Council meeting last week, Cllr Elfed Gruffydd said he believed this condition had been broken as most of the items being sold are no different to what is on offer at the market held in the town on Wednesday each week.

He said: “Back when we supported allowing this market to be held on Sundays, we made it clear that it should be different to the market held on Wednesdays and that it should include local traders.

“The market has started already, with Easter being early, and when I went down there I was shocked to see what was on offer.

“They are not doing enough to encourage local craftworkers and producers to the market.

“It was part of the conditions for the market that they had to sell local produce and have local people selling their items there; they seem to have now broken that condition.”

Cllr Henry Williams added: “I didn’t see any local producers, just a lot of stalls selling handbags, clothes, toys and some goods from Anglesey.”
