A Ceredigion artist has teamed up with her 90-year-old mum to help families uncover stories they may one day wish they had asked about.

Artist Sue Dewhurst, who is based near Llandysul, created Stick the Kettle On after noticing how many families slip into the same conversations when visiting their parents and grandparents, asking how they are, what they have been up to and if they fancy another cup of tea.

But sitting across the table is someone carrying 70, 80 or 90 years of stories you've never heard.

Working with her 90-year-old mum Ann, Sue has developed prompts to get those stories flowing over a cuppa.

The result is Stick the Kettle On, a quirky conversation kit exploring schooldays, first jobs, terrible fashion choices, romance, music, holidays, family life and more.

It also includes invitations to write down family recipes in your own handwriting, tell a favourite joke or send a card to someone you've lost touch with.

“We're very good at keeping photographs,” said Sue, “but sometimes it's the tiny things you miss. Someone's handwriting. The story they always told. The daft joke you've heard a hundred times.

“I didn't want to create something solemn. I wanted something that gave you an excuse to stick the kettle on, have a laugh and discover things about you simply hadn't thought to ask.”

Sue's mum has been co-writer, chief tester and, according to Sue, a fairly ruthless editor.

“She is 90 and perfectly capable of telling me when one of my ideas is rubbish,” Sue laughs. “So I've had excellent quality control.”

And behind all the humour sits one very simple thought:

Don't wait until you wish you'd asked.
