LLANIDLOES Town Council will host a public meeting to discuss the future of the under-threat day centre next week.

Powys council plans to axe funding to the Llanidloes centre at Maes-y-Wennol, as well as other day centres across the county, as part of a £16m savings plan, have been labelled a “shameful disgrace” in a petition to save the service which has gathered hundreds of signatures.

Cllr Gareth Morgan said the “lifeline” centre must be kept open, and questioned whether Powys’ plan to “cobble together” an organisation of volunteers, charities and community to run the site would be feasible.

“The day centre is immensely valued by the users, the staff and the community,” he said.

“A substantial number of people have signed the petition, which is an important way of getting the message across to Powys council how important the day centre is to Llandiloes. It really is a lifeline to so many.”

A consultation report has outlined three options, with the most likely outcome the closure of all day centres except Westwood in Welshpool which is run by Welshpool Town Council.
