LLANWNNEN WI spent 4 March celebrating St David’s Day.

In the afternoon members joined the St David’s Day Parade through Lampeter and then assembled at the Victoria Hall to enjoy Welsh culture at its best – local primary school children and Cwmann Male Voice Choir singing a selection of Welsh songs and Emyr Lewis, former Wales rugby player and the son of one of our members, addressing the gathering. To follow tea with Welsh cakes was enjoyed by everyone.

In the evening, members were feasting again, with Delyth at Y Pantri, Lampeter this time.

Everybody enjoyed hearty cawl with a variety of Welsh cheeses and fresh bread, a special dish made of laverbread and Glamorgan sausages, a selection of traditional desserts followed by tea and Welsh cakes.

After the meal, the monthly meeting was held with Carol Thomas presiding and the relevant business was conducted.

The monthly competition was then adjudicated by Delyth and the winner of the prettiest mug was Ceinwen Roach, with Gwen Davies and Alice Davies in second and third places respectively.

Before departing the President thanked Delyth most sincerely for an excellent meal and Ann Hughes for arranging the evening.

On Monday evening, 1 April, members convened for the first time at Ysgol Dyffryn Cledlyn, Drefach and everyone felt that the venue was extremely comfortable and convenient. A short meeting was held with Carol presiding and the relevant business was conducted.

Ken Lewis, a former chief inspector with Dyfed-Powys Police, was the guest speaker and he described his upbringing and the coincidences that had happened to him during his lifetime.

After listening attentively to his stories, Ken then adjudicated the monthly competition, a clothes brush and the winner was Avril Jones, with Gwen Davies and Shân Lewis in second and third places respectively.

The evening’s raffle was given by Carol and won by Ceinwen Roach.

Wednesday, 10 April, was a historic day for Llanwnnen WI as a celebratory dinner was held at Cegin Gareth, Lampeter, to celebrate 70 years since the Branch’s formation on 9 March 1949.

As we arrived, Gareth Richards kindly presented a little yellow rose with the Llanwnnen WI logo attached to everybody present, in memory of his mother who was a former member of Llanwnnen WI and his grandmother who was one of the Founder members.

This was a very nice gesture and was much appreciated by all.

Tim Jones then took photos with everybody wearing the yellow roses.

Carol Thomas, president, was the Mistress of the Ceremonies and Ceinwen Roach said grace before the meal.

The guest speaker was Ann Jones, vice-chair of the National Federation of WI and was introduced by Carol.

In her speech Ann reminded us of important world treaties and pioneering devices that had been invented in 1949.

Avril Jones had very kindly made the celebration cake and the honour of cutting the cake was given to the oldest former member, namely Avarina Lewis, formerly of Talgrwn.

As a token of appreciation, Carol presented a basket of flowers each to Ann and Avril.

Ann Hughes, the secretary, then gave the vote of thanks.

After the meal, members had a look at an exhibition of old WI photos, which had been prepared by Carol. The next event will be the garden tea party at TyGlyn Mansion, on Tuesday, 7 May.
