AN Aberystwyth councillor has written to the university to raise concerns over the number of students on the town’s beaches.
Cllr Endaf Edwards said he counted 20 fires on South Beach on Monday evening with large groups of students huddled around them ‘with a complete disregard for social distancing’.
Cllr Edwards told the Cambrian News: “I understand that this is the beginning of a new academic year and there is an intake of new students.
“For most, this is their first time living away from home and they want to get to know other students.
“However, this year is different as we are being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We need, all of us, to maintain strict social distancing all the time.
“However, this doesn’t seem to be the case. At around 9.45pm tonight (Monday), I saw 20 fires on South Beach with a large group of students huddled around each, with a complete disregard for social distancing.
“The figures for Ceredigion have been relatively low compared to other areas, but I am concerned that this area will be affected to a greater degree than it has been so far and the behaviour of students is not helping.
“I have asked the Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University, Professor Elizabeth Treasure, to remind all students that we are still affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and that the guidelines on social distancing must be followed at all times.”
