THREE Ceredigion schools have been visited by BMX record holder Matti Hemmings as a reward for their impressive effort and success in this year’s Big Pedal challenge.

The UKs largest inter-school cycling and scootering challenge inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school.

On each day of the challenge, schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of cycling or scootering journeys.

The prize event is generously funded by Ceredigion County Council and will wow pupils with performances to celebrate their success.

Ceredigion performed exceptionally well in this year’s Big Pedal, with the three awarded schools achieving the following results:

• Ysgol Talybont - 60 per cent of pupils cycling and scooting to school for the small schools One Day Challenge;

• Plascrug Primary School - 40 per cent of pupils cycling or scooting to school for the Large Primary School Five Day category;

• Ysgol Felinfach - 93 per cent of pupils scooting or cycling in the Small Primary Schools Five Day Challenge. First in Wales for this challenge and third overall in the UK.

As a prize for their success, Matti travelled to Ysgol Talybont, Ysgol Plascrug and Ysgol Felinfach on Friday to give a BMX display to pupils.

Pupils in the area are being supported to cycle, scoot and walk to school thanks to Sustrans’ Active Journeys programme which helps schools to increase the number of travelling actively to school through a range of in-school activities and events.
