PUPILS at a north Ceredigion village primary school were given a “fascinating” lesson in First World War history last month.
PCSO Chris Tipper delivered the lesson at Ysgol Pontrhydfendigaid on Thursday, 5 October, where he showed pupils his impressive collection of World War One memorabilia, as well as relics and artefacts, which were kindly lent by The Tin Shed Experience, Laugharne.
PCSO Tipper delivered a “fascinating”, “fun-filled” workshop according to the schoolchildren, who are studying the First World War.
As well as all of the 1914-1918 relics, he also brought with him a mannequin solider called Tommy, dressed in a fully equipped soldier’s uniform and also some more modern warfare gear and weapons, such as wire clippers, modern bayonets, bullet-proof tactical vests and a standard issue soldier helmet.
He also had an array of weaponry and uniforms, such as shells, grenades, knives and rifles.
As well as items he’s bought and acquired over the years, PCSO Tipper brought things that belonged to his grandfather, who fought in the First World War.
He showed the class three main medals which were awarded to him during the war. The children gasped in awe at his grandad’s bravery and success.
Children heard that PCSO Tipper’s grandfather didn’t take any of his medals home with him, but kept a much-cherished Christmas gift box that he received from Princess Mary during his time at war.
Year 6 pupils Mari Humphreys and Harry Houghton said: “It was a very informative session, presented by one very inspirational man."
