GWYNEDD schools and education staff have been named on a shortlist for a prestigious national teaching award.

The innovative work carried out at Ysgol O M Edwards in Llanuwchllyn and Ysgol Bro Lleu in Penygroes has meant that both Gwynedd primary schools have been shortlisted in the ‘Best use of Digital learning’ category.

In addition, the work carried out by Gwenan Ellis Jones, who co-ordinates the Welsh Language Charter for Gwynedd Council’s Education Department, has been recognised in the category for ‘Inspirational use of the Welsh Language’.

Cllr Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for Education said: “Many congratulations to everyone who has been shortlisted for these national awards. It clearly shows that we can take pride in the fantastic staff we have here in Gwynedd who are eager to make a difference to the lives of our young people.

“With new technology playing such an important part in young people’s lives, it is wonderful to see the work of two Gwynedd schools being recognised in the category for Digital Learning.

“I am also delighted that Gwenan Ellis Jones’ fantastic work on the Welsh Language Charter has been highlighted as an example for others. Thanks to this work, pupils across Gwynedd have benefitted from the scheme which aims to increase the social use of the Welsh language.

“Gwenan’s enthusiasm and commitment has been integral to the success of this work in Gwynedd which also celebrates what it is to be Welsh and why we should be proud of our culture and language.

“Since the Welsh Language Charter was launched in Gwynedd in 2011, it has become a blueprint for counties across Wales and Gwenan Ellis Jones has been instrumental in helping to develop similar schemes in counties across Wales. I wish Gwenan along with Ysgol Bro Lleu and Ysgol O M Edwards all the very best in the awards.”

The Professional Teaching Awards Cymru aim to celebrate the commitment, and hard work of teachers across Wales. Nominations were received from parents, students, colleagues and employers. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony at Hensol Castle on 13 May.
