Criccieth is set to have a new multi-million pound primary school to replace Ysgol Treferthyr which has “significant building defects”, the Cambrian News can reveal.

Gwynedd Council has secured an investment in principle, including a financial contribution from the Welsh Government, towards a project worth nearly £5 million to build a new school.

The application for funding followed a condition survey on the school, which identified “a number of issues which mean that a number of significant defects to the structure will require attention within the next five years”.

Five years ago around £500,000 was spent in an attempt to extend the lifespan of the buildings – but “unless plans are now made for a long-term solution, there is a high risk of having to deal with an urgent situation,” Gwynedd Council said.

The plans could see the school merge with Ysgol Llanystumdwy, as the council investigates what impact the building of a new school would have on the nearby Church of Wales school.
