A Gwynedd school with only nine pupils on the books could face closure, a new report has warned.

Ysgol Abersoch, which serves pupils aged between three and eight, has a capacity of 34 but only has two nursery and seven full-time children, despite the village having a population of 783.

The school was last inspected in June 2017 and its performance was rated “good”.

In January 2019, as part of the Welsh Government’s national system for categorising schools, the school was placed in the ‘yellow’ category of support, which is defined as “an effective school that is already doing well and knows what areas it needs to improve”.

But Gwynedd’s Cabinet will be given a recommendation next week that a report be drafted on the school’s future.

In September 2018, 24 of the 34 pupils who lived in the Ysgol Abersoch catchment area chose to attend other nearby schools.

Cllr Cemlyn Williams, the cabinet member for education, said that informal meetings have already taken place with school governors.
