A Pwllheli primary school pupil has been taken to hospital after contracting a potentially life-threatening infection.

The child, who goes to Ysgol Cymerau, is receiving treatment for meningococcal septicaemia - potentially deadly blood poisoning, which is caused by the same bacteria that causes meningitis, the NHS says.

A letter was sent out by Public Health Wales to parents of pupils at the school on Monday, 20 January, which confirms the diagnosis and lists the possible symptoms of the infection.

Speaking on behalf of the council and the school, a Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “A pupil from Ysgol Cymerau is receiving hospital treatment for meningococcal septicaemia.

“The school has followed all the relevant guidance and worked closely with Public Health Wales in dealing with the matter.

“Whilst the likelihood of another case is very small, a letter from Public Health Wales has been sent to all families explaining that there is no reason to make any change to the school routine and no reason for children to be kept at home.”

Public Health Wales declined to comment, saying they do not remark on individual cases.
