A community artwork celebrating the River Teifi and the people who live alongside it is to be displayed at the Senedd in Cardiff.

The Llais yr Afon project, led by Cardigan-based Small World Theatre, will feature in an exhibition at the Pierhead Futures Gallery from 14 November this year until 11 February next year.

The project brought together schoolchildren, artists, scientists and conservationists from communities across the Lower Teifi Valley to explore the river's natural environment, history and cultural significance.

Working alongside spacetocreate, West Wales Rivers Trust and Save the Teifi, participants developed a contemporary folk map reflecting their connections to the waterway.

The work was inspired by a manuscript map made by Idris Mathias, who was a local postman, historian, author, and cartographer, from Cardigan, Ceredigion between 1945 and 1962, which recorded features of the Teifi Valley over a period of 17 years.

Initial activities involved pupils at Cenarth and Llechryd primary schools before expanding to communities including Cilgerran, Cardigan and St Dogmaels.

Through workshops, storytelling and public events, residents contributed memories, local knowledge and creative work to help tell the river's story.

The project also supported the development of The People's Plan for the River Teifi, a community-led vision for improving its future.

Five themes emerged from discussions: access, biodiversity, food and farming, water quality, and culture and heritage.

Organisers hope the artwork will encourage conversations about the pressures facing the Teifi, including pollution, climate change and land use, while celebrating its importance to local communities.

The exhibition will give the project a national platform and introduce visitors to the people and landscapes that shaped the work.

Llais yr Afon received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation's Blue Spaces Programme.
