AN ABERYSTWYTH man who began his career in radio at Bronglais hospital has been named Radio One’s new head of programmes.

Aled Haydn Jones, a former pupil of Ysgol Gymraeg Aberystwyth and Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig, was promoted to Head of Programmes at BBC Radio 1 this week, replacing Rhys Hughes.

The former Chris Moyles Show producer has most recently been hosting The Surgery, and is a senior producer at the station.

He said he was “very proud” and “honoured” to take up the post.

Aled began his media career working on local hospital radio Radio Bronglais and Radio Ceredigion before making the leap to London to work for the BBC, where he has been for the last 20 years.

He has also been an S4C presenter on the WawFfactor, Cân i Gymru and on his own show Llond Ceg discussing the issues that young Welsh people face.

Aled joined BBC Radio 1 in 1998 as a broadcast assistant on the Roadshow, and started work on the Chris Moyles show in 2002 before moving with him to breakfast in 2004.

Aled oversaw the launch of the Chris Moyles Breakfast Show in 2004 and presented Radio One’s The Surgery giving advice to vulnerable teenagers for six years, and also managed Radio One’s Weekend shows and events including The Teen Awards and Big Weekend.

He was awarded an Honorary Bachelor of Arts Degree from Aberystwyth University by Aberystwyth University Students’ Union president last year.
