A FORMER Ysgol y Moelwyn pupil has been recognised as ‘Officials’ Official’ at this year’s British Athletics Officials’ Conference.

Arwel ‘Taff’ Williams was born in Tywyn before attending Ysgol y Moelwyn in Blaenau Ffestiniog for his secondary education.

Following an illustrious career in the police force, where he rose to the ranks of Detective Superintendent, Arwel decided to dedicate his time to officiating sports events across the country, especially in his adopted hometown Liverpool.

At the start of the month, the 14th annual British Athletics Officials’ Conference took place where a number of awards were presented to acknowledge the service and achievement of various officials throughout the last year.

At the awards Arwel was named as ‘Officials’ Official of the Year’, an accolade which was “totally unexpected” according to his reaction.

The former police officer was praised for his work at Liverpool Harriers AC and Merseyside events, National Track and Field competitions and refereeing the 2016 World Half Marathon championship amongst other notable achievements.

At a speech announcing his award, it was noted that Arwel is “renowned for being proactive, good humoured, industrious and engaging and works tirelessly promoting the club and encouraging up and coming officials”.

The award was a surprise for the Tywyn-born sports fanatic.

“I was stuck for words - not a very often occurrence some may say - but proud to have been selected as British Athletics Officials’ Official of the year,” he said following the event.

“Big thanks to those who have supported and mentored me over the years on Track and Field and Endurance - colleagues, officials, family and friends. You all know who you are.

“Also my better half who has spent many a day at home when I’m away officiating.”

Arwel is the son the late Eifion Williams and his mother Margaret Williams still lives in Belle View, Ffestiniog.
