A COMMUNITY group which has taken over public toilets in Llanidloes has urged businesses and residents in the town to provide financial backing for the good of the town.
The new Llanidloes Community Services Committee took over responsibility for the main toilets in the town at the Gro car park on Monday, 4 January after Powys County Council said it would no longer maintain public toilets in the county.
The committee, which is made up of seven volunteers including county councillor Gareth Morgan, Llanidloes mayor Phyll Davies and Mike Catley, of Llanidloes Rotary Club which is providing funding, is hopeful of winning financial support from local residents, businesses and Llanidloes Town Council.
Cllr Morgan, who is the chair of the committee, insisted that, to keep the town thriving and attract tourists and visitors, the public toilets were vital.
He said: “Tourism is one of the main industries throughout the county of Powys. Unless we provide decent services we cannot hope to maintain the trade that we have at present let alone develop it further.
“The condition of the Llanidloes toilets has already caused us to lose some bus tours.
“I believe that most people judge a town by the quality and cleanliness of its public toilets and amenities.”
