A Llanfachreth woman hopes her recent running accolade will inspire others.
Litah Atans’ friends urged her to get in touch with the ‘Cambrian News’ following her incredible achievement at the Yr Wyddfa 100.
“On Saturday, 5 September I completed my first 100-mile ultramarathon, the Yr Wyddfa 100, finishing 3rd female overall,” Litah explained.
“The race is around 102 miles (163km) through the mountains of Eryri, with around 6,300m of elevation, and took me just over 35 hours to complete.
“There were around 120 runners on the 100-mile course, with only 12 women on the start list.
“What perhaps makes the result a little more unusual is that I'm not a sponsored or professional athlete. I'm a single mum, run my own recruitment business from home and fit my training around full-time parenting, work and a very busy lifestyle.
“There isn't a team of coaches or support staff behind me - I've largely had to juggle the training and everything else myself.”
Litah added: “I also only started running later in life, after making some big lifestyle changes and becoming much more health-focused, including giving up alcohol. What started as something I did for my own health and wellbeing has gradually developed into a passion for mountain running and, eventually, ultramarathons.
“I certainly wasn't expecting to finish on the podium in my first 100-mile race.
“Once I realised during the race that I was in third place, however, I became determined to defend that position all the way to the finish.
“The first two women were both very accomplished ultra runners, so to find myself racing for a podium place was quite surreal.
“I've lived in the Dolgellau/Llanfachreth area for many years and spend a huge amount of my time running in the surrounding mountains, so it felt particularly special to achieve this here in Eryri.”
