11 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Ceredigion today according to the latest figures.

A total of 2,069 cases have been recorded across Wales today with 17 new deaths.

These new deaths take the total number of Covid related deaths in Wales since the start of the pandemic to 3,662.

244 of those deaths have been recorded in the Hywel Dda region of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, while 595 have been recorded in the Betsi Cadwaladr area of North Wales and 36 in Powys.

Across West and Mid Wales today, Carmarthenshire recorded the biggest daily number of new cases with 94.

Powys has recorded 42 new cases while Pembrokeshire has recorded 35.

Gwynedd has recorded 16 new cases and Ceredigion, 11.

The total number of cases in Hywel Dda Health Board area since last March is 11,670 – 8,105 in Carmarthenshire, 1,303 in Ceredigion and 2,262 in Pembrokeshire.

Gwynedd has now recorded 1,804 cases in total and Powys has recorded 2,616 cases.

Giving the daily briefing, Dr Giri Shankar, Incident Director for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: “In the light of the serious situation in Wales, the Education Minister announced yesterday that all schools, colleges and independent schools should move to online learning until 18 January.

“Schools and colleges will remain open for children of critical workers and vulnerable learners, as well as for learners who need to complete essential exams or assessments. Welsh Government has indicated that Special Schools and PRU’s should remain open if possible.

“With vaccinations for COVID-19 progressing, we welcome the start of the roll-out of the second Coronavirus vaccine (from Oxford/AstraZeneca) in Wales, with the first patients receiving their vaccine yesterday.

“The effects of the vaccines may not be seen nationally for some time, and with Wales at alert level four we must continue to follow the advice on keeping Wales safe. Stay at home, meet only the people you live with, maintain social distancing, wash your hands regularly, and work from home if you can."
