Plans for a potential hotel development on the site of Harlech’s closed swimming pool have sparked disagreement at a packed public meeting.
The meeting, held at Neuadd Goffa on Thursday, 22 October, was chaired by Cllr Gwynfor Owen and organised by Harlech Community Council to discuss the future of the swimming pool and King George V playing fields.
Cllr Reg Chapman told residents that two schemes previously presented to the Harlech and Ardudwy management group had failed to secure sufficient funding to proceed.
He expressed disappointment that neither proposal had been financially viable.
However, a hotel development company has since expressed interest in the site.
According to the community council, the proposal would align with Harlech's strategic development objectives and priorities previously identified by Gwynedd Council and Visit Wales.
Cllr Chapman said any hotel developer would be required to provide a swimming pool and other public facilities.
The proposals prompted disagreement among sections of the audience, particularly supporters of previous efforts to reopen the swimming pool.
Former pool director Heidi Williams made an impassioned plea to save the facility, receiving support from some of those attending.
Harlech and Ardudwy Leisure Centre closed in August 2024, with its future remaining uncertain following unsuccessful efforts to secure a new operator.
Community group Pobl Harlech withdrew its bid in 2025 following reports that a hotel development could include publicly accessible leisure facilities.
The meeting also addressed the future of King George V playing fields.
Cllr Chapman confirmed that no playing field land would be lost to the proposed hotel development.
However, he said significant improvements were needed following approximately 15 years of minimal maintenance, particularly as football returns to the area.
Harlech Community Council is now developing a five-year improvement plan for the playing fields and is inviting suggestions from residents.
