THE family of long-serving Llanidloes councillor Lady Shirley Hooson have paid tribute following her death at the age of 91.
In a statement, Lady Hooson’s family – her daughters Sioned and Lowri and granddaughters Sian and Megan – paid tribute to her and her love for Llanidloes.
They said: “She loved Llani, so we’re very grateful that she was able to stay at home thanks to all the excellent support she received.
“The family will all miss her greatly. She was a much-loved mother and Nain.”
Cllr Lady Shirley Hooson passed away at her home on Saturday, 21 April. A funeral service will be held at Llanidloes’ Welsh Presbyterian Church on Saturday.
Llanidloes town and county councillor Gareth Morgan said Lady Hooson had played a huge part in Llanidloes, representing the town on both Montgomeryshire District Council for over 20 years and on Llanidloes Town Council for 44 years.
He said: “Llanidloes was deeply saddened upon hearing of the death of Alderman Lady Hooson.
“Lady Hooson was Llanidloes’ most distinguished citizen.
“She had represented the town on Montgomeryshire District Council from its inception in 1973 until 1996 when it was absorbed into the Powys unitary authority.
“During her term on the council she was chair of the personnel committee and also became the vice-chair of the council.
“She cared for her electorate with commitment and passion and earned their unfailing support and admiration.
“In addition she served as a member of Llanidloes Town Council for 44 years including a term as mayor, until ill health forced her retirement.
“She was awarded the rare honour of being made Honorary Alderman in recognition of her long and loyal service.
“Her passing leaves a large gap in the public life of Montgomeryshire.
“Llani will never be the same without her, nor will it see the like of her again.”
