Queues are growing outside petrol forecourts today despite pleas for drivers not to panic buy.
Motorists have been waiting at least 15 minutes to get to a pump at Morrisons filling station in Aberystwyth this afternoon following a combination of panic buying and the return of students to the town.
The queue to the forecourt is stretching out along the slip road but is not restricting flow on the nearby roundabout at present.
Elsewhere in Wales, forecourts in Llandudno have been temporarily shut to manage the flow of traffic and Sion Jones, of Valley Services in Llandysul told the BBC that he would have to "consider rationing fuel sales" to customers if panic buying continues.
The UK Government’s transport secretary, Grant Shapps, has tried to dissuade drivers from panic buying petrol, saying motorists should ‘carry on as normal’.
The issue has been exacerbated after BP announced on Thursday that it was to start rationing supplies of petrol and diesel due to a shortage of HGV drivers.
The Petrol Retailers Association, which represents two thirds of Britain’s petrol stations, has warned drivers to keep tanks at least a quarter full.
The Welsh Government said: "The shortage of HGV drivers is of significant concern as they are critical to effective and timely distribution of goods across the country.
"We are monitoring the situation very closely but responsibility lies with UK government and we continue to raise our concerns with them."
