OVER the past few years the Rotary Club of Mawddach has arranged for every Year six pupil in the Mawddach and Barmouth catchment areas to receive an Osborne dictionary before leaving their primary school. This is because the Mawddach Club together with many Rotary clubs around the country support the aim of encouraging literacy throughout the world. In many overseas areas this may take the form of supplying classroom materials and such basics as exercise books and writing materials. In the UK we feel that the provision of dictionaries encourages pupils to find more ways of expressing their thoughts. On contacting the relevant Heads to arrange this year’s distribution, we were told that pupils with elder siblings had been asking their teachers when they would be getting their own dictionaries. The wait was over this week as Rotary Club members visited the first four schools, Ysgol Dinas Mawddwy, Ysgol Gynradd Dolgellau, Ysgol Llanelltyd and Ysgol y Traeth, Barmouth (see pictures above). As well as looking forward to using their dictionaries in their new schools, some of the pupils were also getting all their classmates to sign them so that they would have a permanent reminder of their primary school friends. We would also like to wish all these pupils every success in their new schools.
