THE new mayor of Pwllheli has spoken of his pride at being elected to the position, and how he is keen to “move forward in the footsteps” of previous mayors.
Cllr Mici Plwm was elected mayor at the council’s meeting in May.
In a speech to the council following his confirmation as mayor, Cllr Plwm spoke of his time as a councillor, and his first experience of being in the town council chambers.
He said: “Ten years ago I walked into Pwllheli Town Council’s chamber for the first time.
“It’s very hard, in words, to describe what exactly was going through my mind that night.
“One thing is for sure, it was a very good feeling and I had to pinch myself to make me realise I had been accepted as a Pwllheli town councillor, the town I’d lived in for 20 years and more, a place I call home and the pearl of Pen Llyn.
“The warm welcome I received from the councillors that night remains clear in my memory and it’s good to say that the majority of those present that night are still with us here tonight - but sadly a fair few have left us.”
Cllr Plwm was a member of Penrhyndeudraeth council before joining Pwllheli.
He added: “If I could turn the clocks back to my 21st birthday I’d find myself in a similar position that year as well.
“Walking into my first meeting of Cyngor Plwyf Penrhyndeudraeth as the youngest councillor, not only in Meirionnydd and Wales, but the whole of Britain.
“They say everything comes in threes and that’s very true.
“Here I am again, with another 10 years gone by, back in the council chamber and given the honour of wearing the mayor’s robe.
“I intend to move forward in the footsteps of mayors I have the privilege to follow.”
Cllr Plwm outlined what he wants to achieve whilst in the role.
He said: “I’d like to see the town’s residents appreciate and support local businesses - and therefore attract more businesses to the town.
“I want to encourage young people to consider and venture into business and ensure that the town’s young people have a strong voice in the community.
“I will support events in the town to bring residents and visitors from further afield together to enjoy, and take advantage of the resources that already exist - Neuadd Dwyfor, the library, sport like football, rugby, cricket, sailing; public footpaths, historical sites, and many more.
“I am, without doubt, looking forward to my term as mayor for the next year.”
