A COUNCILLOR has called on authorities to provide lighting at bus stops in Rhydyfelin after a passenger almost fell getting off a bus.

Cllr Alun Lloyd Jones said a lack of lighting at the two bus stops in Rhydyfelin are “an accident waiting to happen”.

He said it was so dark, bus drivers have been struggling to see passengers waiting at the bus stops.

Ceredigion County Council and the Welsh Government, however, say the problem is not their responsibility.

Cllr Jones said: “It is a very dark area and the trunk road lighting at Rhydyfelin are like candles compared to other villages along the A487 trunk road.

“A passenger leaving the well-lit bus at Rhydyfelin last week stumbled and nearly fell, as they could not see the pavement, nor the bus stop itself.

“There is an accident waiting to happen, especially as the nights begin to draw in again.

“Where does health and safety come into this affair, as elderly and even disabled people are unable to see properly to alight and depart from buses, and bus drivers are finding it very difficult to spot passengers waiting for buses in the dark, and in two months or so the clocks will be put back and dark winter nights will be upon us again.”

After first approaching the Welsh Government, Cllr Jones was told that lighting at bus stops was the responsibility of Ceredigion council.

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: “Council officers will be liaising with Welsh Government colleagues regarding street lighting responsibilities at bus stops on the trunk road network in the county.”
