CONTROVERSIAL plans for an Antony Gormley-style art installation on Borth beach have been rejected.
County councillors at a development control meeting today voted 10-9 against the proposal.
Taliesin artist Robert Davies had wanted to erect a metal cast oak tree on the beach between Borth and Ynyslas.
Councillors who attended a recent site visit on the beach with objectors and supporters had recommended that the planning committee approve the plan.
But at the meeting today, most councillors were against the scheme.
Mr Davies said the main intention of the work was to inform the public about climate change.
He said the community of Borth could adapt positively to the increase in visitors and that the tree would become a part of the community.
Supporters of the scheme included both Ben Lake MP and Elin Jones AM.
However, there was strong opposition, including from almost 1,000 people who signed a petition against the sculpture.
There were concerns that the natural beauty of the area would be spoiled.
