THE MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd has called for more refugees to be rehoused in the UK.
Liz Saville Roberts was celebrating World Refugee Day last week alongside her fellow Plaid Cymru MPs Ben Lake, Jonathan Edwards and Hywel Williams.
Speaking at the event, which was held in London, Mrs Saville Roberts said: “As we mark World Refugee Day, it is worth noting that there are more than 68.5 million people globally who have been driven from their homes.
“Over a third of these people are refugees sheltering in neighbouring countries because conflict and persecution means that it is not safe for them to remain in their own country.
“I pay tribute to Gwynedd Council who have done incredible work supporting refugees through the work of the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Programme in welcoming refugees to our county.
“The work of CEFN in Dwyfor Meirionnydd in providing aid to those seeking safety on these shores and beyond should be greatly commended and I’m humbled that people in Gwynedd have extended such a warm welcome to those refugees who have settled here.
“It is incumbent on both the UK and Welsh Governments to fulfil its international obligations to resettle more refugees in the UK and provide adequate support for councils and community organisations to support refugees in Wales and across the UK.”
