A consultation into polling stations in Ceredigion has been launched, with the local authority saying it was likely there would be some proposed changes.

Under regulations, the authority must carry out a review of polling places and stations, with a consultation having begun on 16 October.

That will run until December, before a period of consideration by the council ends with proposals being put before the council in January next year, with the council saying that it is likely there will be some proposed changes to the current situation.

That could see changes to polling stations in Cwmystwyth in Melindwr ward; Comins Coch in Faenor ward; Aberystwyth Central; Blaenpennal in Lledrod; Llanon in Llantsaintffraid; Talsarn in Llanfihangel Ystrad; and Trewen in Beulah ward, although some of those would be reliant on acceptable alternative locations being identified.

A report that went before the council’s Cabinet says: “A preliminary review has been conducted by the acting returning officer of the current polling districts, polling places and polling stations within the Ceredigion area and in respect of the parliamentary constituency, with a view to establishing their suitability and identify any potential alternatives where considered appropriate.

“Whilst assessing the current arrangements, consideration has been given to the location, size, availability and accessibility of polling places and stations.

“In addition consideration was given to a number of concerns and complaints received at the European Parliamentary Election in May 2019 regarding the locations, size and appropriateness of some of the polling stations.

“The acting returning officer will be proposing a few changes for consideration to the Ceredigion council area following the consultation period with stakeholders.

“The acting returning officer will ensure the relevant notices are published and stakeholders are contacted directly to encourage engagement with stakeholders.”
