PWLLHELI councillors are set to contribute £14,000 to ensure the town’s four public toilets remain open.

In the autumn of 2015, Gwynedd Council carried out a public consultation to allow residents and organisations to have their say on a range of possible service cuts that would be needed to bridge the huge funding shortfall facing the authority.

This included a proposal that the council stops maintaining 50 out of a total of 73 public toilets in the future.

At a Gwynedd Council Communities Scrutiny committee, members decided that they would ask town and community councils to contribute towards the cost of maintaining facilities and possibly transfer responsibility for facilities to them in the future.

In Pwllheli there are four public toilets which include Marian y De, Stryd Penlan and Y Maes which are open throughout the year and Marian y Môr which is open seasonal.

At a Pwllheli Town Council meeting members decided to opt for the option of creating a partnership with Gwynedd Council to keep the public toilets open by making a contribution towards each one.

Gwynedd Council are asking for a £4,000 contribution towards the three toilets which are open all year round and a £2,000 contribution for the seasonal facility.

Cllr Michael Sol Owen said it was important that the council backed this option as it was an important to keep the toilets open in the town.

He said: “We can’t avoid taking responsibility for the public toilets; it would look very bad on us if we didn’t.”
