Lampeter postman Barry Davies is slogging his way towards the finish of his epic 870-mile charity trek around the Wales Coastal Path today.

Barry set out from Chester on 10 May bound for Chepstow, intent on raising £1,500 for Cancer Research UK.

He set himself a daunting time limit of 33 days, meaning that he has to average around 26 miles a day in order to complete his goal.

Now, with just 43 miles remaining, the super-fit postie is on course to reach Chepstow on Saturday, meaning he would complete the walk in 29 days – a feat which not even some of his most ardent supporters thought possible.

Although Barry and his fellow walkers set off in bright sunshine from Barry this morning, they are bracing themselves for anticipated heavy winds and rain which threaten to slow their progress tomorrow, with Chepstow tantalisingly within sight.

But Barry, who lost two stone during the walk, has been heartened by generous financial donations which have seen him easily surpass his original cash target and which currently stands at over £4,500.

“The money I raise will help fund life-saving research and to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured,” he said, prior to setting out.
