Pupils from Canolfan y Môr, Aberaeron secondary school have been taking part in weekly woodworking sessions, learning basic woodworking skills under the guidance of the Trustees of Aberaeron Men’s Shed.

The sessions have given the pupils the opportunity to learn practical skills including measuring, marking out, using tools safely and constructing wooden projects.

The sessions have also helped the youngsters develop confidence, communication, concentration, teamwork and problem-solving skills – while giving them the satisfaction of creating something themselves.

After completing a programme of work, the pupils were presented with certificates recognising their achievements in basic woodworking skills.

Members of Aberaeron Men’s Shed said they were delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the pupils throughout the sessions. “It has been fantastic to see the pupils’ confidence grow each week,” said a spokesperson for Aberaeron Men’s Shed.

“They have worked hard, learned new skills and shown real enthusiasm for making things. We are very proud of what they have achieved and hope the experience will encourage them to continue developing practical skills.” The initiative is also helping to build links between the Men’s Shed, local schools and the wider community, with members able to pass on practical knowledge and skills to a younger generation.

Lead specialist teacher Mr Jack Davey from Canalfan Y Mor said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to gain confidence and communication skills while learning practical woodworking skills”.

Aberaeron Men’s Shed would like to congratulate all the pupils on their achievements and thank Canolfan y Môr, Aberaeron School for their support.
