THE QUEEN’S Baton – a symbol of the Commonwealth Games – will travel through Dolgellau next year, councillors have confirmed.
In April 2018, the Gold Coast in Australia will host the 21st Commonwealth Games.
In the run-up to the games, the Queen’s Baton, a similar concept to the Olympic Torch, will travel throughout the Commonwealth, including Dolgellau on 8 September.
At this month’s council meeting, Dolgellau mayor Dyfrig Siencyn revealed that the baton will be passing through the town, coinciding with the opening of Ysgol Bro Idris, the area’s new 3-19 all-through superschool.
The baton will also pass though other towns and villages in the region, but details are scarce for the time being.
“The baton will be travelling throughout Wales and we’re very lucky to have it pass through Dolgellau along its route,” Cllr Siencyn said at the meeting.
“We’ll be looking for 12 to 15 people to help carry the baton though town which we will decide upon closer to the time. Everybody is encouraged to think of any suitable candidates.
“It’s a bit of attention for Dolgellau and good news for the town."
