THE failure of Aberystwyth’s South Beach to win a Blue Flag award should be explained and a strategy on how to win it back should be made public, a town councillor has insisted.
While North Beach regained the prestigious Blue Flag this year, it was confirmed that South Beach had again missed out on the award with Cllr Martin Shewring saying he had been told it was partly down to problems with dog fouling on the beach and water quality issues.
He called on the town council to demand Ceredigion County Council’s strategy for regaining the Blue Flag for South Beach.
Cllr Shewring said: “I’m very disappointed that has not happened again. Why have we not achieved the Blue Flag for South Beach?
“What is the strategy of Ceredigion Council? They are the responsible authority. What is the strategy for regaining the Blue Flag for South Beach?”
While Cllr Shewring claimed that dogs being allowed on the beach and instances of dog fouling had been one of the key reasons for the failure to win the Blue Flag, other councillors questioned whether that was correct.
Cllr Kevin Price said there were issues over water quality being affected by pollution in rivers which flowed into the sea at South Beach.
Cllr Wendy Morris said dredging of the harbour could also be affecting the water quality at South Beach.
