North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Andy Dunbobbin is reminding victims of crime that support is available to them through the North Wales Victim Help Centre following the UK Government's early release scheme.

The centre is a service is commissioned by the PCC and delivered by the independent charity Victim Support.

The early release scheme, which from 1 October has seen some prisoners released earlier than originally anticipated, may understandably cause concern and anxiety for victims and their families, particularly those who have experienced trauma as a result of crime.

The Victim Help Centre provides free, confidential support to victims of crime across North Wales, helping people to cope with the emotional, practical and personal impact of their experiences.

Mr Dunbobbin said: "We know that our prison system is suffering under the weight of many years of funding cuts and lack of investment, meaning tough decisions on early release may have to be made. While decisions relating to the early release scheme are a matter for the UK Government, it is vital that victims know they do not have to face these concerns alone.

"Supporting victims remains one of my highest priorities, and through the funding provided by my Office, the Victim Help Centre is able to offer practical and emotional support to anyone affected. The service's experienced staff can help people understand the support available, address concerns about safety and wellbeing, and connect victims with specialist organisations where appropriate.

The Ministry of Justice will be setting up a dedicated helpline in the coming weeks to provide emotional support and practical advice for people affected by, or concerned they may be affected by, early releases.
