A budding entrepreneur from Llanbedr is upcycling old wellies to make bird boxes in his latest venture.
Will Bailey, 12, usually attends Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn but since the countrywide lockdown he has been using his free time to launch his new venture, Will’s Welly Bird Boxes.
The young entrepreneur is making bird boxes out of old wellies, as gifts for family members who have upcoming birthdays.
Both Will and his sister, Amelia, are keen adventurers.
Helen Bailey, Will’s mother, said: “Whether it be lambing, trapping, digging, running or building – accompanied by his faithful sheepdog Sally and his two hens, Mo and Jacob – he’s on it!
“His previous and successful enterprises include Wyau Will, supplying and delivering eggs to local people courtesy of Mo and Jacob, and building treehouses alongside his older sister who has the benefit of a couple of years’ additional experience.”
Of the reason for choosing this welly project, Helen explained: “The legacy of his and his sister’s outdoor exploits are the selection of battle-worn outgrown wellies that dwell in the back kitchen of our home.
“The challenge: how to upcycle a random and significant clamp of waterproof foot garments? The solution: Will’s Welly Bird Boxes!
“Whilst upscaling to achieve world domination is a bit tricky in this period of UK lockdown, for the foreseeable future Will is happy to settle for a mini ‘not-for-profit’ business model!”
Will’s Welly Bird Boxes are made from one old welly, a section of softwood, one branch, superglue and one long nail.
Helen said: “As parents, we have enjoyed helping support Will in his latest venture as the various upcycled wellies, once in situ, act as personal and satisfying reminders of our children at the different stages of their welly lives.
“Especially at this time of deep and personal reflection and contemplation. We will settle for that before concerning ourselves about the multi-million-pound commercial deal that may be just around the corner!”
