LAMPETER Bowling Club’s Anwen Butten is targeting medal success at her fifth Commonwealth Games for Team Wales on the Gold Coast.
The seasoned international will be seeking her third medal at the Games, after twice returning with the bronze medal.
At the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester she partnered Joanna Weale to her first bronze in the pairs event, and four years later she was again selected for Team Wales out in Melbourne, but she was unsuccessful in winning a medal.
Butten then competed at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and picked up her second bronze medal in the pairs event, this time with Hannah Smith.
She was then selected again for the 2014 Games in Glasgow, having also been chosen for the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay in Carmarthen.
In 2016, she also won a silver with Kathy Pearce and Emma Woodcock in the triples at the 2016 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Christchurch.
The 45 year-old has previously enjoyed success at the World Outdoor Championships, winning a bronze medal in the fours at Leamington Spa in 2004, a silver in the fours and a bronze in the triples at Christchurch in 2008, and a bronze medal in the fours at Adelaide in 2012.
Ten Welsh bowlers will join the five para bowlers announced late last year, which included Jonathan Hubbard, Raymond Lillycrop, Gilbert Miles, Julie Thomas and Pauline Wilson. Joining them will be Anwen Butten, Laura Daniels, Stephen Harris, Ross Owen, Daniel Salmon, Jess Sims, Caroline Taylor, Jonathan Tomlinson, Emma Woodcock and Marc Wyatt.
Helen Phillips, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Wales Board, who confirmed the selections, said: “Being selected for Team Wales is a huge honour for these elite competitors, and is a result of all the dedication that they have put into training and competing at the highest level. The standard really bodes well for a successful Games.”
