CEREDIGION bowlers Anwen Butten and Kevin James have won silver and bronze medals at the Atlantic Rim Bowls Outdoor Championships, held in Cyprus.
Butten, of Lampeter Bowling Club, a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, was skip to a four that included mid Wales team mates Kathy Pearce of Berriew and Jess Sims of Llandrindod Wells, along with Laura Daniels of Neath.
After progressing through the gruelling group stages, a sensational last-end count of six shots gave Butten’s team a dramatic 19-17 victory over Ireland in the quarter-final, and the following day they went on to beat South Africa 18-9 in the last four.
In the final, however, Scotland’s Bex Craig, Lorraine Malloy, Stacey McDougall and Claire Johnston opened up a 17-8 lead, and they held on to win by 18-14.
“I’m so proud to be coming home with a silver medal from the Atlantic Championships,” said Butten.
“It has been a pleasure to be a part of this wonderful team and I would like to thank all the girls in my rink who have made it so special.”
Kevin James, of Cardigan Bowling Club, and a former British Isles Singles winner, was meanwhile part of the Welsh quartet of Ross Owen, Paul Taylor and Steve Harries that reached the semi-finals stage.
They were edged out in the penultimate stage by the Scottish team of Stewart Anderson, Neil Speirs, Paul Foster, Alex Marshall 14-12, but returned with bronze.
