ON the night Chris Gunter became the first Wales player to earn 100 caps, Aberystwyth’s Rhys Norrington-Davies received his fourth senior cap and played his part in an impressive 1-0 win against Mexico.
With caretaker boss Robert Page making 11 changes to the side that was beaten 3-1 in the World Cup qualifier in Belgium in midweek, Norrington-Davies was utilised in an unfamiliar left centre back role in the friendly against Mexico in Cardiff on Saturday night and played his part in keeping a clean sheet.
After an impressive display, the former Ysgol Penglais pupil will be hoping to play a part in the next World Cup qualifier when the Czech Republic visit Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday. The Czechs will come into the match after holding Belgium to a draw in Prague on Saturday.
His father Patrick said after the win last night: “I was slightly concerned he was at LCB as he prefers to attack down the left wing.
“However, another very proud moment as l think he had a very strong defensive performance, a win against a strong opponent and a clean sheet.
“So he will be a very happy young man this evening.”
Regardless of the result, this was always Chris Gunter’s night as he became the first player to achieve 100 caps for the men’s national team.
However, the win made it an even sweeter experience for a fans’ favourite.
The only thing that would have completed the occasion would have been having The Red Wall in the stadium but due to the pandemic, they will have to wait to show their appreciation to Gunter in person for his service.
Gunter was also given the captain’s armband for the match as he expertly shepherded an inexperienced defence to a clean sheet, helping Cymru to inflict a first defeat on Mexico in 11 matches, with their last defeat coming against Argentina in September 2019.
The game was won Jonny Williams got into the box and squared a wonderful pass to Kieffer Moore, who had space and time to flick the ball into the net past Guillermo.
