ABERYSTWYTH’S Rhys Norrington-Davies’ focus is all on doing well in the upcoming Euro 2020 group stage games as the squad flies out to Baku today.
Having played 90 minutes in Cymru’s final pre-tournament friendly, against Albania at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, attention now turns to the two games in Baku and the third Group A match in Rome.
Robert Page’s men have a tricky set of fixtures, taking on Switzerland on Saturday, then Turkey on Wednesday before clashing with the Italians the following Saturday.
And Norrington-Davies will be hoping to get some game time after a stand-out performance in the goalless draw against Albania played in front of 6,500 Wales fans.
The former Ysgol Penglais pupil said: “It felt great to be out on the pitch in front of the Red Wall, something I haven’t experienced since my debut for Wales. The atmosphere inside the stadium was unreal.
“It was important for us to get through the game without any issues and get some important minutes under our belt before we head to Baku.
“I thought that we played well, but it didn’t click for us in the first half.
“The quality wasn’t there which let us down, however, I thought second half we were a lot brighter.
“We have to build on that this week prior to our first game against Switzerland.”
The 22-year-old added: “All of our focus is on doing well in the upcoming games.”
Rhys’ proud dad Patrick said of his son’s display against Albania: “In the first half he just didn’t see enough of the ball so couldn’t exploit down the left.
“The second half, much better, a lot more ball, some lovely runs and crosses that could have resulted in goals but wasn’t to be.
“He was composed and confident on the ball and just very happy to be involved for the full 90 minutes.
“The relatively small crowd had a huge voice and made a massive difference to the atmosphere in the ground.”
