Aberystwyth has awoken this morning to a strong smell of smoke in the air.

Several residents have taken to social media asking where the smoke has come as the west Wales coast awoke to a hazy dawn with a strong smell of smoke in the air.

It appears there are no local wildfires but instead the smoke has been blown west from the wildfires burning 75 miles away at Llangynydir Reservoir near Ebbw Vale.

Aberystwyth Fire Station said: "We are aware that many communities have woken up to significant smoke and haze this morning.

"Our crews have been out investigating reports and have been unable to locate any local incidents.

"At this time, we believe the smoke is travelling from the wildfires currently burning in South Wales.

"If you see a fire or have concerns that there may be an active fire in your area, please call 999 immediately.

"We would also ask everyone to help reduce the risk of fires during this exceptionally dry period by taking extra care when outdoors.

"Please avoid activities that could accidentally start a fire and follow any local safety advice.

"Due to the smoke in the atmosphere, residents may wish to keep windows and doors closed where possible.

"Thank you for your continued support and vigilance."

The wildfire in south Wales led to a major incident being declared over the weekend, but firefighters have managed to get the blaze under control.

Crews from across mid and west Wales have been drafted in to tackle the fire.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for the foreseeable future while work continues to fully extinguish the fire and ensure the area is safe.
