An Aberystwyth councillor who was rescued by the RNLI will give something back to the lifesaving charity by climbing four Cadair Idris peaks in one day.

Aberystwyth Town Councillor Nishant Chandolia will climb Craig Cwm Amarch, Penygadair, Cyfrwy and Mynydd Moel on 3 October, carrying an RNLI flag to each summit.

In October 2022, Nishant got into difficulty while kayaking in Cardigan Bay and needed help from the RNLI.

“That experience has stayed with me ever since,” he said.

“When you are actually the person who needs help, you realise just how important the RNLI is.

“I wanted to do something that would genuinely challenge me as a way of saying thank you.”

Nishant’s one-day challenge will take him over Craig Cwm Amarch at 792 metres, Penygadair at 893 metres, Cyfrwy at 811 metres and Mynydd Moel at 863 metres.

He is currently preparing for the climb through walking, hiking and fitness training, and will share updates in the run-up to 3 October and from the mountain itself through his Instagram account, @nishantcymru.

He said the response to the fundraiser had already been encouraging.

“To have raised more than £300 in three days has meant a lot,” he said.

“I’m really grateful to everyone who has donated, shared the fundraiser or sent messages of support.”

Living in Aberystwyth, Nishant said the RNLI’s work also has a particularly strong local significance because of the town’s close relationship with the sea and coastal activities.

Explaining more about the challenge on his fundraising page, Nishant said: “In recent times, lifeboat crews have faced criticism and hostility for rescuing people in the Channel, including being called “traitors” for doing exactly what they are there to do — save lives.”
