Road closures will be introduced in Barmouth so a £1.5 million upgrade of the local electricity network can take place. 

The investment involves reinforcement of underground cables, boosting capacity and ensuring reliability and resilience as electricity demand grows.

Work will get underway next month, with temporary traffic management deployed to complete it safely and quickly.   

The main phase of essential works starting in the town centre in mid-November requires the temporary closure for up to three weeks of King Edward Street, between The Royal pub and St Tudwal's Church, leading to a lengthy diversion and increased journey times for the duration of the closure. 

SP Energy Networks is holding drop-in sessions in King Edward Street’s Oasis Community Room, next to the South Gwynedd Foodbank, on Monday 28 September, 1pm-3pm, Wednesday 30 September: 6pm-8pm, and Monday 5 October, 6pm-8pm. 

David Ford, SP Energy Networks Head of Planning and Network Improvement, said: "This investment will provide a much-needed boost to the local electricity network in Barmouth – most of which dates back to the 1950s and 60s.

“Upgrading now is essential to ensure we have the capacity to meet modern electricity demands and continue to provide a reliable and resilient power supply for homes and businesses across the area. 

“This is a complex and challenging project and there’s no doubt this work is vital – but there’s also no doubt it will cause significant disruption, particularly around the closure of a key route like King Edward Street and that’s why we’re coming out to talk to people now.  

“We’ve put a lot of thought and consideration into planning these works and worked closely with key stakeholders to undertake the most impactful phase outwith the busy summer season, but before Christmas festivities get underway. We’ll also be working with our contractor to deploy additional teams on the ground so we can move as quickly as possible.”
