COUNTY planners approved the installation of a ground-mounted solar PV array at Cenarth, Forge; demolition of two rear extensions, and the erection of one rear extension at Goleufryn, Machynlleth.

An application for the creation of a small roof terrace on an existing flat roof, accessed by alterations to existing window opening to from doorway (resubmission), at 21 Tanerdy, Garsiwn, Machynlleth, was refused.

Gerddi Gardens

MEMBERS received an update from lead co-ordinator Angela Paxton about recent successful volunteering days at the group’s Cae Glas, Plas-based gardens.

Angela spoke about the fantastic volunteers who have been busy barrowing water to the gardens in 25-litre containers, making them aware of how precious this resource is. To reduce the need to water, the group has been cultivating the ‘art of watering’ – giving deep drinks to plants to encourage deeper roots and drought resistance.

They have also mulched the vegetable beds with compost and put down layers of cardboard and woodchip in the mini orchard to conserve moisture.

Volunteers have also installed a new 1,000-litre rainwater tank and fixed the shelter’s roof to collect as much rainwater as possible.

Members expressed their pleasure at the project’s continued success and paid thanks to all concerned, particularly the dedicated volunteers.

Bowls

TO all intents and purposes, holders Machynlleth are ready to concede this season’s first division title of the Montgomeryshire County League after they lost at home to new favourites Newtown by 15 shots. Newtown’s jubilant players won on all four rinks to secure the maximum seven league points.

Maglona, notching their third win of the season in the county league division two, moved further away from the foot of the table as they edged a nail-biting two-shot victory at Abermule, boosting their points total by five to the homesters’ two.

Children’s fun day

THERE will be a children’s fun day on the large green in the Bryn-y-Gôg housing estate on Saturday, 18 August, 2pm - 5pm. Many activities have been arranged, including face and pottery painting, bouncy castles, burger van, and a raffle.

Mach Maethlon

ON Thursday, 2 August, at Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens, Angela Paxton led an information session on ‘wise water use’: the art of watering; green and brown mulching; drought resistant planting; pros and cons of rainwater, greywater and mains water; to mow or not to mow!

The following day, at the local bowling club, Clwb Coginio joined the Green Goat Café to learn the art of using authentic Mexican ingredients to create Taco toppings and salsas for a street food extravaganza, which was enjoyed by all.

U3A

DYFI U3A will host a special meeting to hear a talk by Dr Alan Axford and Menna Manley on the charity Hospice at Home. The meeting will be held at Machynlleth Bowling Club on Friday, 17 August, at 2pm. The mission is to set up a hospice at home service in the Machynlleth area with local volunteers. A warm welcome is extended to all.
