Bowls

INSPIRED play by the Llynlloedd bowlers saw Machynlleth power through to the third round of the Caruthers’ Shield Welsh Clubs’ Championship, giving short shrift to their Monmouthshire visitors, Llanhilleth, on Saturday, 8 July. Recording winning scores on all four rinks, they crushed their opponents by 43 shots (100-57) and secured an away tie at Carmarthen for a place in the last eight of Wales’ premiere club competition.

Two days earlier in division one of the Montgomeryshire County League, taking home all seven league points, they secured a fine 30-shot victory at leaders Kerry and open-up the race of the title.

Maglona enjoyed their best result of the season at home to Abermule despite losing by two shots in division two. They won on three rings to collect three points, but Abermule (four points) took the honours thanks to an excellent result on rink four.

Beaten finalist in 2016’s Montgomeryshire CBA Open Singles, Welsh international Andrew Fleming triumphed at this season’s finals held at Berriew BC recently, with a 21 shots to 14 score line.

In the final of the senior pairs, David Rowlands and Barry Fleming retained their title with a thrilling 14-13 victory over Welshpool’s M. Morgan and D Edwards. Then, in the final of the senior fours, Don Lewis, David Thomas, Barry Fleming and David Rowlands were unable to prevent the Carno foursome of G Hamer, M Morgan, J Williams and T Owen from emerging victorious 21-13.

Planning

POWYS County Council’s Planning Committee met on Wednesday, July 12, and approved the following applications: Erection of a dwelling, formation of vehicular access and all associated works, plot adjoining Brynperian, Penegoes; erection of a detached dwelling and garage, formation of vehicular access and all associated works, land adj Hafgan, Llan, Llanbrynmair.

The committee received for information that, under delegated powers, an application for change of use of land to form site for holiday units comprising six cabins, formation of vehicular access and roadway, installation of sewage treatment plant and all associated works on land at Rhyddyfeity, Staylittle, Llanbrynmair, had been approved.

Information was also received that the following applications had been refused: Removal of garage and erection of extensions. Alterations to conservatory roof, fenestrations and existing access, Frondirion, Penegoes; listed building consent (LBC) for internal works and restructure, demolition of outbuilding, replacement of existing fenestrations and all associated works, Llys Maldwyn, Heol y Doll, Machynlleth.

Football AGM

WILLIAM Lloyd Williams presided at Machynlleth Football Club’s annual general meeting held at the local bowling club on Friday, 7 July.

The three teams’ managers reported on satisfactory progress in season 2016/17, which was endorsed by members. The meeting resolved to continue to field teams in the Spar Mid Wales League, Cynghrair Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League, Welsh Beef and Lamb Mid Wales Youth League and the various national and leagues’ cup competitions.

The meeting then went on to elect its officers: president, William Lloyd Williams; chairman, Warren Evans; vice-chairman, Paul Humphreys; treasurer, William Lloyd Williams; secretary, Sion Jones.

Exhibitions

THE Tabernacle sends a warm invitation to the public to view the current exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) Machynlleth. Admission to the galleries is free.

In the Ruralist Room as you enter is Still Life an exhibition of paintings by Margaret Foreman.

In the Foyer is the exhibition An Ostentation of Peacocks, mosaics by Martin Cheek.

On the first floor, Owen Owen Gallery, Pulpit Room and Bridge, is the 2017 Tabernacle Art Competition exhibition. In the Tannery Gallery is the exhibition of selected works from The Tabernacle Collection. In the sculpture space are the Culture Colony Interventions. These interventions will disrupt the normal running of the gallery exhibition programme with a number of unannounced exhibitions by several leading artists working in Wales today. The Mela (Festival) Mosaic, created by Martin Cheek to a design by Balraj Khanna, is in the entrance lobby to the auditorium.
