A woman who cycled 600 miles to raise money in memory of her Minffordd-born father has raised £1,700 for charity.
Eluned Jones set herself a 300-mile target to raise money in memory of her dad, Dewi, but she smashed that in September so decided to double it.
Eluned’s dad, Dewi, a former Ysgol Ardudwy pupil, died from a brain tumour six years ago. He was 63.
Eluned, 31, wanted to do something to remember him and decided cycling was the way to go.
“I’ve wanted to raise money towards Cancer Research for a while,” Eluned explained.
“When I saw the challenge to cycle 300 miles in September, I thought, what better way of going for it in memory of ‘Dewi Beic’!”
She added: “I started cycling at the beginning of lockdown – quite a late starter considering that dad was such a keen cyclist.
“However, I fell off the bike – dad’s bike, which was maybe a bit big for me – and broke my wrist.”
Despite the setback, Eluned was determined to continue.
“The research is even more critical since the beginning of the pandemic, as it has affected cancer research and treatments greatly,” Eluned said.
Eluned’s sister, Angharad, joined her on Sunday to finish the final three miles with her, from Porthmadog to their father’s old house on Minffordd.
Boyfriend Iwan, who accompanied Eluned on some long rides on weekends, was also there. Eluned’s cycling challenge has raised £1,700 for Cancer Research UK’s Cycle 300.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed as it means an awful lot, especially in these hard times where cancer research and treatments have unfortunately been put on the back burner,” Eluned said. “I hope the donations will be very helpful for those in need.”
