THE Trefeglwys Chair Eisteddfod will be held this year on Saturday, 17 October, a fortnight later than usual. This is the 109th eisteddfod since it was established. The judges this year will be Trystan Lewis (Music) and Eurig Salisbury (Recitation and Literature). Ruby Grigg will judge the dance competitions.
Two special awards have been presented to the committee this year by the families of two gentlemen who were passionate supporters of Trefeglwys Eisteddfod and who were an integral part of it over the years.
A shield in memory of Hefin Bennett has been presented by his family to be awarded to the best reciter in the afternoon session each year, in the competitions for primary school children.
Hefin was one of the comperes of the Eisteddfod for an incredible half century, therefore a very familiar face on the stage in Trefeglwys. He was also a farmer by profession, a councillor, and a Justice of the Peace.
A cup has been presented by the family of Alun Watcyn Bunford in his memory, which will be awarded to the winner of the Musical Solo in the evening session annually.
Alun had been a member of the committee, as well as competing in the Trefeglwys Eisteddfod and singing the Chairing Song, for many years – with his strong bass/baritone voice. He had also been a community councillor, a governor at the local school, and Chair of the village hall committee.
This year’s president is Dr Andrew Griffiths from Burgess Hill, Sussex. The afternoon session will start at 12 pm, and the evening competitions will begin at 6 pm, with the chairing ceremony at 7:30 pm. There will be a warm welcome and refreshments available to competitors and the audience alike throughout the afternoon and evening.
